This year Derek, my 9 year old, has one continuous theme in his Christmas list, Rubik’s cubes. He has been obsessed for months, taking his Rubik’s cubes (yes multiple cubes!) on weekends away, out to dinner and even to school. He can solve a side in about 5 seconds but what impresses me the most is that he is full on obsessed with figuring out the algorithm behind the cube. When he first started with the Rubik’s Cube, Derek asked us if he could watch the youtube video to solve it. We said “NO” and told Derek he needed to figure it out himself, and to use his brain. At first he was upset and wanted to solve it right away with the tutorial but then he realized he wouldn’t really be solving it, he would be copying someone else that solved it, and so the obsession began….To solve the cube on his own!! He still hasn’t solved all sides at once but he is trying!
